A would-be robber recognized a convenience store clerk and gave him a thumbs-up before walking away, authorities said.

But the courtesy isn’t stopping Jefferson County investigators from searching for the stick-up man, who is suspected in a robbery at another store a short while later.

The clerk at a Quick Save convenience store in the 4800 block of Ward Road told police that a man wearing a blue hoodie, blue bandana, jeans and red and yellow shoes walked into the store around noon Tuesday and threatened to rob the store, according to a news release from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

The suspect looked at the clerk, swore, and said, “I was going to rob this place, but I know you,” the release said. “Do you know me?”

The clerk said he did not recognize the robber, and the suspect answered, “Good,” and walked out.

Before exiting, the masked man gave the clerk a “thumbs up” sign, the release said.

The suspect was driving an early 1990s full-size sedan that is silver or gray. It has dark, purple-tinted windows and no visible license plates.

Shortly after the Quick Save clerk reported the incident, a 7-Eleven store at the intersection of West 58th Avenue and Ward Road in Arvada was robbed by a man fitting the same description.

Anyone with information should call the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office tip line at 303-271-5612.
