Interstate 70 is backed up near Georgetown. (John Leyba, Denver Post file)

Re: “An old idea to help relieve ski traffic on I-70,” Jan. 11 Jeremy Meyer column.

The issue of heavy traffic on Interstate 70 in the mountains has been going on for years. All the recent talk again of adding buses, and the earlier talk of a train along I-70, is not likely to really fix anything.

The people who use I-70 are not likely to be interested in using any public transportation service unless they are working at some job that doesn?t require any significant amount of gear. Most of the rest of the I-70 traffic is either recreational traffic, or people passing through the mountains, or semi-trucks. The recreational traffic will likely be out-of state tourists, and these people are very likely to be carrying lots of sports gear, general luggage, trailers with recreational equipment, and they might have children and pets. Those I-70 users will not likely ride public transportation, as their logistical issues are just more complicated than a train or bus service would accommodate.

What we need to fix this mess is more traffic lanes. Add the needed lanes and double-deck the narrow spots. More lanes is the answer to accommodate the wide range of activity desired by people using our most important highway. Fund it and do it, and let’s get on it soon.
