A man who stole a car left running on the street early Tuesday died when he crashed into another vehicle, Denver police said.

According to police, officers responded to the 3300 block of Krameria Street after a vehicle was reported stolen. The victim said he’d left his vehicle parked, unlocked, unattended and running on the street in front of his home, a practice known as “puffing.”

The suspected thief fled, driving east on East 35th Avenue. A short time later, police said, the stolen vehicle collided with another in the area of East 38th Avenue and Quebec Street.

Both the victim in the crash and the unidentified suspect were transported to the hospital with serious bodily injuries, police said. The suspect later died.

Police is asking the public not to leave cars running unattended, saying puffing is a ticketable offense and an invitation to car thieves.
