The Colorado Fraternal Order of Police must have confused last Thursday with April Fool’s Day, since a statement it released then could easily be mistaken for a joke.
“The firing of Frank Gale is union busting designed to send a message to the FOP that is intended to have a chilling effect on its members,” its executive director declared.
Frank Gale? Oh, he’s the latest high-ranking member of the Denver Sheriff Department to be sacked or demoted for malfeasance or incompetence. In Gale’s case, the former second-in-command was found to have given egregiously preferential treatment to a department captain facing criminal charges rather than treat her like any other accused.
I , the city had little choice but to bounce Gale. But naturally he is fighting the dismissal, as is the norm in these situations.
And no wonder. Gale, incredibly, has been fired twice before, in 1991 and 2000, and reinstated each time.
But they do say the third time’s the charm.
