Condé Nast, the New York-based hulking media giant, announced the purchase of Pitchfork Media today for an undisclosed amount, .

The purchase, which adds Pitchfork to an ever-growing list of Condé Naste brands including Reddit, Wired, and Brides magazine, marks the end of the publication’s independent roots. Launched by Ryan Schreiber in 1996, the site was originally devised to cover only independent music and quickly became renowned for its decimal-perfect album ratings, which could make a rising band. Over the years, Pitchfork began to incorporate mainstream artists into its coverage, and recently teamed up with streaming platform Apple Music to curate playlists.
