Water is flushed from fire hydrants in Glendive, Mont., and tested by government officials after 50,000 gallons of oil was spilled into the nearby Yellowstone River earlier this month. (Larry Mayer, The Billings Gazette, AP)
While the future of the Keystone pipeline is being hotly debated, I find it disturbing that the second large oil spill in four years from a pipeline into the magnificent Yellowstone River, which contaminated the water supply of the city of Glendive, Mont., is practically ignored. Your paper gave it a slight mention in your “Briefs” column on Page 14A. People need to be made more aware of what is already happening with oil pipelines that run through environmentally sensitive and populated areas.
