That a teenage girl lost her life in a confrontation with police Monday morning in a Denver alley is a tragedy. Of that much, we are sure.

However, given the paucity of information released by authorities about the shooting, it’s not possible at this point to reach firm conclusions. And those who have voiced concerns about this shooting should wait for more facts before taking sides.

That doesn’t mean this investigation should drag on interminably without updates to the community. And surely, the teens who were in the car Jessie Hernandez was driving when she was shot will talk about what they saw.

But facts should precede judgments, not the other way around.
