“I started that process back in college,” Powers said this week. “Itap been about three years of gathering documents. Itap really a tedious process, so itap nice to finally be done with it.”
The Notre Dame grad has represented the United States at the youth level, including the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Egypt, but he’s not cap-tied. Powers, 23, could file for a one-time switch if a situation arose in which he had an opportunity to play for Italy. But the Rapids midfielder said he has not heard from the Italian national team. He hasn’t heard from the U.S. national team this year either.
“It opens up a lot of doors, and thatap why I got it in the first place,” Powers said. “So thatap all I’ll say about it right now. I’m glad to have it, but I’m also very focused on this year and this season.”
Meanwhile, his club teammates from U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann to participate in the USMNT’s January camp. Powers said his focus is to train hard, and hopefully earn his shot with the Stars and Stripes.
“I was certainly training (for January camp), preparing myself for it,” Powers said. “I wasn’t invited. Thatap obviously a coach’s decision, but itap not something I’m going to kind of let define me. I’m just hoping to play well here and as a byproduct get a chance with the U.S. team.”
