Zat Knight and the Colorado Rapids mutually decided to part ways, the team announced Monday.
Knight, a former England international defender who joined the Rapids last October, made his debut as a second-half substitute in a 4-1 loss to Seattle in Commerce City.
“We would like to thank Zat for his services to the club,” Paul Bravo, the Rapids’ vice president of soccer operations and technical director said in a release. “He arrived at a difficult time last season and provided valuable experience as well as leadership.
“We have decided to remodel our defense this season and, to achieve that, have signed important players across the backline and in goal. In the circumstances, both sides decided to part ways. But we would like to wish Zat all the best for the future.”
Knight, 34, played seven seasons with Fulham before joining Aston Villa for two seasons and Bolton Wanderers for five. He made two career appearances for the England national team, in 2005.
The 6-foot-6 defender signed with the Rapids on Oct. 1, 2014, recording four shots while scoring zero goals in his four appearances for Colorado, all of which were losses.
