A man who crashed into a school bus Tuesday while driving twice the speed limit — then attempted to escape by running away and opening the doors of cars waiting in traffic — was arrested in Douglas County.
There were no children on the bus.
A spokesman for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said the unidentified suspect had been speeding south on U.S. 85 near Sedalia.
According to the spokesman, the driver raced at about 70 mph through a construction zone area with a posted speed limit of 35 mph.
At one point, the driver raced past a patrol unit near U.S. 85 and Meadows Parkway. But before the officers could try to stop him, the driver went through a red light at the intersection and was struck by another car.
That caused his vehicle to climb over a median and crash into a Douglas County Schools bus that was waiting to make a left turn onto Meadows Parkway.
After the crash, the driver left his vehicle and ran away on Meadows.
As he ran, the spokesman said, the suspect tried to open at least four car doors.
Eventually, a number of onlookers tackled the driver and detained him until officers arrived to arrest him.
The spokesman said an initial investigation did not reveal why the suspect, who will probably face traffic and attempted carjacking charges, was driving so erratically.
More information is likely to be released Wednesday, according to the spokesman.
