The Grand County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday identified the 30-year-old deputy killed Tuesday in an early-morning two-vehicle crash.
Deputy Alycia Riggs died after she failed to negotiate a curve while traveling south on U.S. 34 near Granby in a 2008 Nissan pickup. The truck moved into northbound traffic, slamming driver’s side into a truck, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
Riggs was transported to Middle Park Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at about 8 a.m.
Riggs is survived by a 3-year-old daughter and large extended family, county officials said. She had been a law enforcement officer since 2006 serving as a member of the Sterling Police Department and Adams State University Police Department before becoming a sheriff’s deputy last September.
“The Grand County Sheriff’s Office, the local public safety network, and the Grand County community lost a dedicated, law enforcement officer this morning,” Sheriff Brett Schroetlin said in a statement on Tuesday. “Law enforcement and public safety professionals share a unique family bond and are mourning together the loss of one of their own.”
Alcohol and drugs are not suspected in the crash and Riggs was wearing a seatbelt, the patrol said.
No other injuries were reported in the crash.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m. at YMCA of the Rockies-Snow Mountain Ranch at the Kiva Building on the 1100 block of County Road 53 in Granby.
There will be a public safety procession from the Grand County Sheriff’s Office to the YMCA beginning at 12 p.m. and leading up to the service.
Grand County citizens are invited to attend and show support along the procession route and at the Service.
