A 10-year-old Greeley boy was hospitalized this week after he threatened his family and police officers with a knife, saying “the police are going to have to shoot and kill me,” officials said Wednesday.

At about 5:30 p.m. Sunday, officers were dispatched to a home in the 1200 block of 26th Avenue, where they found the situation unfolding and the boy having cornered himself, police said.

“Officers slowly approached and engaged him in conversation and were able to distract him enough for one of the officers to grab the juvenile’s arm and secure the knife without harm to the child or the officers,” police said.

The boy was taken to North Colorado Medical Center and placed on a hold for evaluation and treatment, police said. Authorities say the juvenile has been “detained.”
