Shoppers at the Walmart store in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, might notice some unusual (for Walmart) products on sale at the cigar kiosk between the store’s bathroom and its photo studio.

“One of the bongs costs 2,068 pesos, so around $140,” Thrush told The Cannabist from her vacation in eastern Mexico. Playa del Carmen is in the vicinity of other popular tourist destinations Cozumel and Cancun.

But Walmart says they’re not selling them
Walmartap initial response to The Cannabist: “The item you mentioned is not a product Walmart Mexico sells. We have rented space to a smoke and tobacco third-party vendor who must comply with local laws and regulations.”

A “flavored tobacco” bong?
Upon a second contact, a Walmart representative told The Cannabist: “This kind of product can be used for flavored tobacco. It could have legal purposes.” When we pointed out the marijuana leaf on a couple of the glass pieces, the corporate representative said, “Itap not inside our sales room. Itap not a product that we sell. Itap one of our vendors — one of the small stores that are outside of our sales room.”
After a few more hours of deliberation, Walmartap corporate communications team got back to The Cannabist: “We are reviewing the situation at this moment.”
