Saturday-Sunday: Japan’s centuries-old Hinamatsuri tradition (a.k.a. “Doll’s Day” or “Girl’s Day”) began as a way to ward off bad spirits. The Colorado version, however, started in 1968 when the Rev. Jonathan Fujita of Arvada’s United Methodist Church was looking for a way to keep Japanese traditions alive for expats living in the West. This year’s 47th annual Hina Matsuri at Simpson United Methodist will feature elaborate displays of dolls, kimonos, ikebana (flower arrangements), bonsai and calligraphy alongside live taiko drummers, martial arts, Japanese dance and music, origami lessons and even an Japanese tea ceremony. 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m. March 7-8, 6001 Wolff St. Free, with donations encouraged. 303-428-7963 or .
