Ground was broken recently for the 26-story SkyHouse luxury apartments at Broadway and East 18th Avenue. To make way for the project, developers removed parking lots with more than 200 spaces. (Brent Lewis, The Denver Post)

Re: “Downtown Denver’s development boom adds vibrancy, subtracts parking,” March 1 business news story.

I attended Colorado Ballet’s ‘Masterworks’ matinee last Sunday afternoon. When I arrived at the Denver Performing Arts Complex to park, I discovered there were no parking spots left in the complex’s huge garage. In my 32 years in Denver, I’ve never seen that lot full. As a result of not being able to find parking in a timely manner anywhere, I missed most of the first performance.

A dense downtown sounds great on paper, but there are a lot of folks who now cringe at the thought of having to head downtown and avoid it. That translates into a world where the only people who spend time there either live there already or travel there on light rail, bus or bike. Many of us in the metro area do not have access to light rail, bikes aren’t a great option in the winter, and buses are inefficient.

I can attest to the challenges of finding reasonable parking, in terms of both availability and cost, downtown. There was a time when my wife and I frequently went downtown for dining and entertainment, but over the past several years we have significantly curtailed our trips due to the lack of adequate parking. We now look for venues in outlying areas for the things we need and want to do. As your article said, it may be creating a ‘better urban environment,’ but it is impacting many who want to take advantage of what is available downtown.
