A convicted killer on parole told a Colorado Springs police officer he drank “vodka in coffee” before he crashed into two vehicles on Wednesday morning, seriously injuring a woman, court documents show.
Charles Limbrick, 41, , was convicted in 1989 of fatally shooting his mother. Police arrested Limbrick on several charges in connection with the wreck, including driving under the influence and vehicular assault, a felony.
An arrest affidavit says Limbrick’s breath smelled of alcohol, his eyes were bloodshot and he was “unsteady on his feet” when interviewed after the crash. Police say he refused a roadside sobriety test.
Limbrick was driving a Dodge van at about 11:15 a.m. Wednesday near at the intersection of Circle Drive and Constitution Avenue when he rear-ended a Chrysler Pacifica stopped at a traffic light, police said.
Limbrick was 15 years old when he murdered his mother, 42-year-old Betty Limbrick, in their Colorado Springs home. Police said the boy shot his mother in the head with a .357 Magnum.
A friend of the boy who witnessed the crime said after Charles Limbrick fired the revolver, he heard Betty Limbrick say: “Chuckie, I love you, but you just killed me.”
Limbrick served 23 years before his sentence was commuted by former Gov. Bill Ritter.
While Limbrick could be sentenced to more prison time for a parole violation in connection with the crash, it’s not clear what the sentence might be, the Department of Corrections said.
Limbrick is being held at the El Paso County jail on a parole hold, jail records show. He is due in court Thursday.
