Police in Edgewater say a 33-year-old woman faces charges of vehicular assault, driving under the influence and driving with a revoked license in a that left eight people injured Sunday night.
Among those injured were five children, including a 4-year-old.
Police say the woman, whose identity authorities have not released, was driving a Mercury Mountaineer southbound on Sheridan Boulevard when she rear-ended a vehicle leaving a King Sooper’s parking lot.
The initial crash set off a chain reaction that sent the Mercury out of control as it flipped over and headed into oncoming traffic.
The woman suffered serious, life-threatening head injuries in the wreck and was taken to Denver Health Medical Center, police said.
Investigators say the woman was a habitual traffic offender. Police told The Denver Post her identity will not be released unless formal charges are filed against her.
The injuries suffered by the seven others sent to the hospital are not considered life-threatening, police said. However, their injuries include broken bones, according to investigators.
The crash happened near the intersection of 17th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard at about 8 p.m., police said.
The Denver Fire Department said the crash spanned two blocks.
Officials initially reported three people were injured in the wreck.
