From coach Patrick Roy on down, the Avalanche is avoiding giving any hints of looking ahead to next season, even if the questions are framed in context of trying to regain momentum down the stretch with 2015-16 in mind.

“I don’t think any of us are worried about next year at this point,” forward Matt Duchene said Thursday. “We’re not giving up until we’re mathematically eliminated … or if we’re in the playoffs; that’s the time to really get going.

“Yeah, it’s been a tough year all around for everyone in here at times, but we’ve battled through it very well. We’ve been dealt a tough hand a lot of the times, and we’ve played that hand very well. I’m proud of everyone on our team and in here.”

Caron report. Going into the New Jersey game Thursday, newly acquired Colorado winger Jordan Caron, 24, didn’t have a point in four games, playing on a line with Duchene and Jarome Iginla. The Avs openly have said this is a second chance for him after he didn’t gain a foothold at Boston, and his contract is up after this season.

“You have to do your job to earn a contract for the next year,” said Caron, who moved to the fourth line Thursday. “I have to try to make the most of the few games left here. I hope to be here next year. It’s a good organization to be a part of, and the future looks really good.”

Said Roy: “I’m very happy with him. Like everybody, he had a so-so game against L.A. (on Tuesday), but against Pittsburgh, Columbus and (Minnesota), I thought he played really well. He brings something to this team that we need — intensity, size, speed, good hands. I think he’s a good fit for Dutchy and Jarome.”

Hishon update. Center Joey Hishon didn’t suit up against New Jersey, missing his second consecutive game because of neck and elbow injuries. He has played in two of the five games since his call-up from Lake Erie.

“He’s day to day,” Roy said. “Is it going to the next game or the following? But he’s very close.” Terry Frei, The Denver Post
