University of Colorado Hospital president and CEO John Harney announced Thursday he will retire June 30.
Harney joined UCH as chief operating officer in 2008 and was promoted to chief executive in 2012.
UCHealth will begin a national search for Harney’s replacement later this spring, hospital officials said.
Under Harney’s leadership, the hospital grew with the opening of a new inpatient tower, more clinic locations and expanded oncology and ophthalmology services.
Harney played a key role during the formation of University of Colorado Health (UCHealth), the five-hospital health system that serves patients in Colorado, western Nebraska and southern Wyoming.
Harney announced to staff that he is looking forward to retirement with his wife, Maureen, and their family.
“These years leading University of Colorado Hospital and working closely with the staff, faculty and patients here has been the culmination of a wonderful 37-year career in hospital administration,” Harney said in a release. “I’m truly proud of the top-notch care UCH offers to patients who come here from across the nation.”
