During a tribute to first responders on the Senate floor, Sen. Mike Johnston talked about bears, a scared little boy and a Denver police officer killed in the line of duty.
Celena Hollis was while working in City Park during a Jazz in the Park event. spoke at her mother’s funeral.
“I am proud to call myself a public servant but on days like today that feels like saying both Shakespeare and I are writers,” Johnston said. “Some give their time, some give their lives.”
The Senate and the House had welcomed paramedics, firefighters, police and other first responders on Friday for a .”
The resolution was sponsored by Sens. Leroy Garcia, D-Pueblo, and Mark Scheffel, R-Parker, and Reps. Polly Lawrence, R-Douglas County, and Beth McCann, D-Denver. It read, in part:
“First responders risk their own safety and personal property in the execution of their duties to protect the public on a daily basis; and first responders are the first line of defense for the public against threats, both domestic and foreign; and first responders stand at the ready to come to the aid of the citizens of the United States of America twenty-four hours a day.”
Garcia is a paramedic with American Medical Response in Pueblo and teaches emergency medical services at Pueblo Community College.
