PUEBLO — The first step in destroying one of America’s last stockpiles of chemical weapons took place Wednesday at the Pueblo Chemical Depot.
Depot workers destroyed a container of mustard gas in the facility’s new explosion chamber, one of two systems that will be used to destroy nearly 800,000 Cold War-era chemical weapons at the site.
Depot spokesman Tom Schultz said workers Wednesday afternoon were assessing the results of the first chemical agent destruction attempt at the site.
The destruction work has faced years of delays and cost overruns, and the first step was delayed again Tuesday by windy weather.
