Police in Grand Junction say a 48-year-old woman was arrested after she apparently set her home ablaze on Wednesday morning, killing a dog and cat inside.

Laura Lee Sanders is being held on suspicion of fourth-degree arson and two counts of aggravated cruelty to animals.

“When officers arrived, the house was engulfed in flames,” police said. “Sanders was standing outside the house, but refused directions from officers to get away from the home. Instead she attempted to run back toward the burning structure.”

Police say they pulled Sanders away from the burning home, fearing for her safety.

The fire happened overnight on the 2500 block of Patterson Road, authorities say. Police say no one was injured in the blaze.

“Sanders later told officers she used a lighter to ignite the curtains inside the home, stating that the home was going to be torn down anyway,” police said.

Officials say the home sustained heavy damage.
