A man guilty of sexual assault on a child was shot by police Friday in a Walmart parking lot in northeast Denver.

The incident happened about 10:50 a.m. in the 7800 block of Smith Road, near Quebec Street and Interstate 70.

Police were called about a man wanted on a warrant, and they encountered him in the parking lot.

A struggle ensued, and at least one officer used pepper spray before a shot was fired, said Raquel Lopez, a Denver Police Department spokeswoman.

The suspect was identified early Friday evening as 42-year-old John Thomas Clark, wanted for failure to appear for sentencing for sexual assault on a child.

Police, citing the early stage of the investigation, did not say how many shots were fired or how many officers fired. Police also did not say whether Clark was armed.

Clark, who was shot in the shoulder, was taken to a hospital and was in serious condition, police said. No injuries to officers were reported.

An officer responding to the shooting with lights and sirens got into a on Interstate 70 at Central Park Boulevard, police said.

Both the officer and the other driver were taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
