CALGARY, Alberta — Flames coach Bob Hartley has seen Avalanche coach Patrick Roy get mad more than once — including when Patrick Roy, the goaltender, got mad at Bob Hartley, his Colorado coach.
But Hartley said Monday he isn’t surprised that Roy has blown up only infrequently as one of Hartley’s successors behind the Avalanche bench. Hartley also noted that, yes, Roy has picked his spots.
“He’s always going to be fired up, but he’s gaining experience, he knows the game, and he’s a winner,” Hartley said. “He’ll do what it takes to win. If sometimes it boils a little bit, it’s Patrick. I’m very much the same, so I can only defend him. … I had a chance to visit with him this morning. That’s it. It’s game on now; there’s no friends.”
A little later, Roy said, “He said, ‘Do you need something?’ I said, ‘No.’ He said, ‘Us, we need two points.’ … Unfortunately for him, we need two points as well.”
DU vs. BC.
Calgary’s Johnny Gaudreau and Joe Colborne have a wager on the Denver-Boston College game Saturday at the NCAA East Regional in Providence, R.I. Gaudreau played three seasons for BC and was the Hobey Baker Award winner in 2014. Colborne skated two seasons for DU before signing with the Boston Bruins in 2010.
The alum of the losing team Saturday has to wear the winning team’s jersey in public.
“At a media thing or something,” Gaudreau said.
Gaudreau played one season (2010-11) for DU coach Jim Montgomery with the United States Hockey League’s Dubuque Fighting Saints.
“I had a blast,” Gaudreau said. “He really helped me out because he’s a smaller guy too. He’s a great guy. He taught me about things you have to do in the game as a smaller player, and really helped me to get ready for the NCAA and then eventually to come on to the NHL.
“I think he was one of the coaches who helped me out the most.”
