The westbound lanes of Interstate 70 have reopened at Tower Road on Tuesday morning after closing because of a three-vehicle wreck involving a semi-trailer, Aurora police said.

One person was seriously injured in the crash.

The crash and closure happened at about 8 a.m. The interstate was reopened at about 10:25 a.m.

“(The) investigation at this point indicates that westbound traffic was slowing or stopping due to rush hour traffic near that location,” police said. “A semi-trailer was westbound and failed to recognize this traffic congestion and ran into the back of a full-sized, newer model pickup truck.”

The impact pushed the pickup into the back of another semi-trailer in front of it.

“The drivers of the semi-trucks were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries and for observation,” police said. “The driver of the pickup truck was transported to a local hospital with critical injuries, but is expected to survive at this point.”

Police say alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors in the crash.

Aurora police declined to release the names of those involved citing an ongoing investigation.
