Interview with Frank Serafini, owner

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: I grew up in this business. My grandpa and grandma started a pizza restaurant in Brazil after they migrated from Italy. They were there for about five years before they came to the United States and began working for a pizzeria in New York. And then they did the same thing in Detroit before they moved to Colorado. They opened Serafini’s in Commerce City, and then we moved to Brighton 33 years ago.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: It’s a third-generation family business. We are genuine. Everything we make is cooked here. I make sauce and dough every day, and I only work with fresh ingredients.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: It’s 100 percent the people. It doesn’t get any better than face-to-face interaction with my regular customers and with new customers, as well. We have a lot of loyal people who have been eating here for years and they’re the reason we do this.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: The economy still isn’t where it should be. Food costs are high, especially for the amount of produce I use. Nowadays in Colorado, there’s a shortage of produce. The farmers are out there but their kids aren’t taking over the businesses, so they’re selling them. So we’re going to be paying more for a sack of onions or a box of lettuce because they’re bringing that stuff in from other parts of the country or abroad.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: We are one of the oldest, if not the oldest, pizzeria in Adams County. We also have a large parking lot and we occasionally do car shows out there. In fact, we have one coming up on June 13. It’s going to be a benefit for a little girl who has some serious health issues. She’s actually the daughter of one of my customers.
