Utah got rid of firing squads for executions a decade ago because they were bad for the state’s image. Now the state has reinstituted them as a backup when lethal-injection drugs aren’t available. It was right the first time.

Even the governor who signed the latest bill considers a firing squad a “little bit gruesome.”

Rather than resort to the antiquated method of executing prisoners by hauling them before a team of marksmen, Utah should dispense with the underlying need by getting rid of the death penalty.
