Interview with Layla West, owner
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: Over the years, I realized that I had a passion for buying used and re-purposed items. After purchasing my home in Lakewood, I needed so many things and I really enjoyed finding beautiful, unique, affordable items to place in my home that were used or re-purposed, rather than going into debt for new items. As a business major working toward my degree in business management, I really wanted to own my own business. I wanted to make a difference by offering beautiful, affordable, used home goods, decor, music, art and memorabilia in a fun, friendly atmosphere that would enable others to find that special item, while being kind to the environment.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: Second Time Around LLC sells quality, used home goods and unique collectibles at affordable prices. We live by a “go green” philosophy, serving the community and the environment with respect. We offer customers professional, friendly service, and the opportunity to save money without compromising the usefulness or quality of their purchases.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: When we are out searching for unique treasures, we meet many different people from all different walks of life. The best part is always when people share their unique experiences, stories and memories associated with the items that they are donating, consigning or selling. It gives us a much different perspective and a great appreciation for those we meet and the items we sell.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: Right now, our biggest challenge is finding affordable music equipment. We’d really like to encourage music and an appreciation for the arts in our community and make it affordable. We would like to develop this part of our shop and be a resource for the local community.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: When I was 7, my mother moved us here from New York. She was a master floral designer and owned a shop over the years in Idaho Springs. She instilled a love for beauty and nature in me and an appreciation for the beauty of Colorado. I am putting live plants throughout the shop, rustic decor and things that are native to Colorado for all those who love living here.
