A fatal wreck on Interstate 25 in Adams County has traffic blocked in both directions for about five hours Wednesday, causing massive backups.

The accident happened around 3 p.m. on the stretch of interstate between Colorado Highway 7 and East 144th Avenue, said Officer Matt Barnes of the Thornton Police Department.

Northbound lanes opened a little before 8 p.m. and southbound lanes opened about 10 minutes later.

Colorado State Patrol Trooper Nate Reid told the Broomfield Enterprise that a female driver, who was traveling south on I-25 in Thornton, died after her car struck the guardrail and veered into the northbound lanes of traffic.

She was ejected from the vehicle and died on scene.

Three vehicles were damaged by debris from the crash, but no one else was injured.

Police are recommending motorists use Washington Street or Huron Street as alternate routes.

The Colorado State Patrol is handling the accident, about one-half mile south on E-470.

The patrol said on Twitter that one person had died in the accident.
