LOVELAND — A man described by friends as being in his early 30s died of a gunshot wound Friday afternoon in south Loveland, officials said.

According to a Larimer County sheriff’s office spokesman, the Loveland Police Department was in unincorporated south Loveland, on Eighth Street Southeast, to talk to an individual in connection with an unspecified incident.

A struggle ensued, and the man being questioned fatally shot himself. The source of the weapon was not disclosed.

Just before 2 p.m., sheriff’s office dispatchers were contacted by the Loveland officers asking for assistance.

A close friend of the man said he had every reason to live.

“(He’s) an EMT; he helps people,” Terry Schefter said. “This is just unreal. … He had a fiancé. He has everything to live for.”

She said police pulled the man, who works at her son’s shop, outside to talk Friday afternoon before the incident. Police closed off the entire business complex at 416 Eighth St. SE on Friday afternoon while sheriff’s investigators collected evidence.

Two Loveland police officers have been placed on adminsistrative leave, following standard department policy. The Loveland Police Department has not released their names.

The Larimer County coroner’s office will officially determine the manner and cause of death.
