Re: “The Civil War wasn’t fought over slavery,” April 6 letters to the editor.
Neither of these two letters regarding the Civil War is technically incorrect, but both are missing the point.
While it is true that Lincoln’s objective was to preserve the Union, the South’s motivation to secede was over “states’ rights,” by which they would be allowed to retain the institution of slavery.
One writer stated that the Civil War was fought mainly over economic reasons. But again, on what was the economy of the South primarily based? Agriculture. And how was it largely maintained? Slavery.
