This is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.
During the Duke-Wisconsin title game, we all saw the CBS replay angle of the ball tipping off the Duke player, not the Wisconsin player. But the only humans in charge of making the call didn’t see that replay angle.
Let that sink in.
“We never saw on our monitor what everybody saw at home, if you can believe that,” John Adams, the NCAA’s supervisor of officials, .
HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?
I hate this about sports these days. Be it an obvious ball called a strike to something as substantial as a possession in a five-point national title game.
“We had been told time and time again, ‘Nobody at home will see anything you didn’t see.’ And I will tell you that’s not what happened last night. That is not an excuse. That is just laying it out for you. …
WATCH:
“I saw it after they had left the monitor, and actually thought about: Is it in my prerogative to get up, run over the table, buzz the buzzer and tell them to come back and look? That’s how critical I thought the play was, and concluded that this is a job for the guys on the floor and I’ve never done this before, why would I do it tonight and perhaps change the balance of the game?”
I don’t know John, maybe because you could have changed the balance of the game in a FAIR WAY?
Look, the Wisconsin player shot a pathetic air ball, which led to the loose ball in the first place. But the rule is a rule, and that was Wisconsin’s ball. They were down five — bucket makes it a one-possession game with over a minute to play.
Yes, we can go on and on about how Wisconsin blew the game in other regards — and how Duke rose to the moment — but that’s not the issue. The issue is that the refs blew a blatant call, and it could have been avoided. Why are refs in 2015 looking at some old TV monitor that came from the back of the “Sanford & Son” truck?
If you’re going to do replay, replay the heck out of it. Get it right. Or, dare I, at least give the refs the angles we idiots at home get to see. Shoot, just turn CBS on for them.
The job is to get it right, not just give it the old college try.
