COLORADO SPRINGS — A former Army medic who was injured in a bomb blast in Iraq was sentenced Thursday to 28 years in prison for a Fountain car crash that killed a boy and injured his siblings.

Andrew Marsh, 46, was unable to convince jurors in February that the crash was caused by the post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury he suffered after a bomb ripped through his Humvee during a 2006 deployment.

Marsh was convicted of 10 charges stemming from the September 2013 wreck, including child abuse resulting in death, vehicular homicide and careless driving resulting in the death of 13-year-old Jamie Steckler. Marsh had been speeding down U.S. 85 and was traveling 75 to 82 mph when he slammed on the brakes before crashing his 2005 Dodge Ram truck into a 2004 Chevrolet Impala stopped at a red light, a prosecutor said Thursday, killing the boy and injuring his young siblings.

Marsh said PTSD made him temporarily insane at the time of the crash. Steckler’s mother asked Judge Scott Sells to sentence Marsh to 30 years in prison.
