An Aurora gang member was found guilty of gun and drug charges in U.S. District Court on Thursday, officials announced Friday.
Michael Eugene Simpson, 35, was found guilty after a three-day jury trial, according to a news release from U.S. Attorney John Walsh’s office.
The Aurora Police Department received information in June 2014 that Simpson, a convicted felon, was in possession of firearms and drugs, the release said.
When officers responded to Simpson’s home, they found him in a car in his driveway, and he attempted to flee, the release said. A law enforcement vehicle was blocking his escape, so he backed into the vehicle multiple times until police broke his car window and used a stun gun on him.
Agents and officers who conducted the search of his home found loaded firearms, cocaine, more than 100 rounds of ammunition, a digital scale, a beaker and “plastic bags used to distribute cocaine.”
The jury found Simpson guilty of one count of possession with intent to distribute cocaine; three counts of possession of a firearm and ammunition by a prohibited person; one count of possession of an unregistered firearm; and eight counts of possession of ammunition by a prohibited person, the release said.
A member of the 83 Gangster Crips, Simpson’s previous drug-related felony convictions prohibit him from legally possessing firearms or ammunition, the release said.
The release said Simpson could face up to 50 years in prison and up to $1,750,000 in fines.
