Interview with Deborah Braun, owner
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: I was a paralegal for 10 years and when I got laid off for the second time in two years, I decided that I wanted to work for myself.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: We are one of the last truly biker-friendly bars on West Colfax run by a real biker. Our prices are working class, we offer a real bargain compared to the big bars. The feel here is comfortable — you get a sense of belonging and you feel welcome every time you walk in the door.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: The customers — for a few minutes every day, you become a part of their day. We often get a window into the everyday lives of the people and the community that we are a part of.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: Like so many small businesses, the day-to-day grind. Finding time to get to the little details that keep everything moving along. Ordering this, fixing that, returning this call. Sometimes the day goes so fast, I can’t keep up.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: Despite what you might see on TV shows, the biker community is friendly, inclusive and generous to a fault. We often give our last dollar to help someone in need. The Hawg Back Saloon is where we go to relax, enjoy and say hello to an old friend.
