FORT COLLINS — After a Thursday afternoon workout in Colorado State’s indoor practice facility, the Rams were down to Friday’s practice in shorts, plus the Green and Gold game at Hughes Stadium before their first spring drills under new coach Mike Bobo are in the books.

Bobo called Thursday’s practice “a good day. We worked a little more on situations, passing situations, some blitz, third down (and) red zone. There was good on both sides of the ball.”

He wasn’t thrilled with the work of the receivers, who are operating with All-American Rashard Higgins still a bit limited because of a hamstring issue as sophomore Nick Stevens and freshman Coleman Key continue to compete for the No. 1 quarterback job.

“Way too many drops on the offensive side of the ball,” Bobo said. “We can’t drop the ball the way we’ve been dropping it and be efficient in the passing game . We have to improve on that.”

Bobo said Higgins probably wouldn’t play in the Green and Gold game.

“There’s an outside chance,” Bobo said. “He probably would be able to go if it was a game, but we probably won’t risk anything. He’s doing a good job of paying attention and taking mental reps. I don’t see the point right now, but maybe (he would play) a couple of snaps, we’ll see how he feels.”

Bobo politely declined to provide an update about tight end Kivon Cartwright, who was granted a medical hardship sixth year of eligibility but now has his ankle and foot heavily wrapped and is using a scooter to keep weight off of it.

“He asked that we not talk about his injury,” Bobo said, adding: “He’s going to be on the shelf and we have to make sure he’s ready in the fall.”

The Green team in the Saturday game will include the first offense, with Stevens at quarterback, plus the second defense; and the Gold will have the second offense and first defense.
