How do you become a personal trainer? Start with a passion for fitness, secure a solid foundation of personal trainer knowledge and hands-on skills, get certified, find the right mentor and start helping people!
Know thine own self. What does the phrase, “Thank God it’s Friday” say about how you really feel about your work day and your career? A personal trainer career should inspire you to hang a sign proclaiming, “Thank God it’s Monday!” If you have a passion for fitness and you love helping people achieve their fitness goals, this may be the career for you. Become a subject matter expert, get an education – a hands-on education. Would an aspiring attorney take the bar exam before going to law school? Why study for an certified personal trainer examination (CPT) before going to school and learning anatomy, physiology, exercise science, diet and nutrition, and program design? Remember that learning to become a personal trainer online makes as much sense as learning to swim online. Secure a reputable Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) certification. Any reputable health and fitness facility recognizes a CPT certification from the American Council on Exercise (ACE); American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM); National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM); and the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA). Get educated at an accredited, personal-trainer specific school and then get certified. Find a mentor, learn the business, build a clientele and reputation. Any professional who excels at what she or he does started with a good mentor. Learn from another trainer’s successes & failures.
