Second baseman DJ Lemahieu, right, and third baseman Nolan Arenado both won Gold Gloves in 2014 for the Rockies.
(Troy E. Renck, The Denver Post).
The fans have spoken.
The Rockies’ Gold Glove infield, consider by many (including me) to be the best in baseball, has a nickname.
It is, drumroll, please …………. Coors Shield.
I love it. It rolls off the tongue, it’s not too obscure and it’s simple. It reminds me of the Pittsburgh Steelers “Steel Curtain,” one of the great monikers in sports history.
Coors Shield is the brainchild of RoxRock4, a member of the Rockies-based blog . RoxRock4’s real name is Drew Baker.
Purple Row’s , and the Rockies’ official Twitter account also got into the act. Coors Shield won both votes.
The Rockies’ Troy Tulowitzki is consider one of the best fielding shortstops in baseball. (Chris Carlson, The Associated Press)
Among the other contenders were “Leather Daddies” (stemming from the TV show “Arrested Development) and “The Tarp,” a nickname promoted by former Rockies outfielder and current Root Sports broadcaster Ryan Spilborghs.
A lot of the Purple Row crowd was pushing for Leather Daddies, but it seems a little bit too, well, too kinky, for popular consumption.
Anyway, here’s hoping that Troy Tulowitzki, Nolan Arenado, DJ LeMahieu and Justin Morneau stay healthy and continue providing highlights. And, perhaps, catcher Nick Hundley will be added to the Coors Shield at some point.
