Getting your player ready...

You might have to use a chainsaw to decipher Young Thug’s rhymes on “Barter 6,” but you’ll have fun doing it.

You might not be able to understand a word is saying on his -trolling project “Barter 6,” but at least you can hear the melodies. Lyrically, you’re better off letting your houseplant speak to you, but, oddly enough, Young Thug still gets his point across. Thatap because with the Thug formula, itap about his ear for production and rhythm that tells the story.

From high profile features from T.I., Boosie Badazz and Birdman and all the pre-release drama, “Barter 6” has already caused a stir in the hip-hop world. But, once you strip down the hype, you’re left with ambiguous rhymes about coupes and windfall verses of Thugger’s staccato singing/rap style.

Young Thug is a polarizing character whose style is obviously a rip-off of the sound Lil Tunechi made famous back when Thug was likely still playing with Legos. Birdman’s influence doesn’t help the process one bit, as he seems to usher Thugger into Wayne’s territory with every hi-hat drenched track. On “Never Had It,” we get a glimpse into the hardships Thug went through to be showered in the diamonds he so coveted during his more broke years.

Thatap about as far as we get in terms of the true depths of an artist. The rest of the album is about foreign cars, loaded guns affectionately referred to as “choppers” and the aroma of women Thug’s slept with.

The album isn’t abysmal, itap just typical. There’s nothing you’ll gain from listening to “Barter 6,” but you won’t lose anything either. For an artist who was featured on countless club bangers over the past two years, Young Thug is still more interesting as a personality for his gender-bending wardrobe and blatant obsession with being the new Weezy. You might have to use a chainsaw to decipher his rhymes through his mealy-mouthed flow on “Barter 6,” but you’ll have fun doing it.
