Re: “Reefer radio: Southern Colorado AM station K-HIGH drops sports for pot,” April 16 The Cannabist blog post.
Colorado Springs, our famed right-wing-nut metropolis to the south, is now home of the nation’s first marijuana-themed radio station. Whatap next, a station that endorses evolution?
KHIG(H) Radio, according to station manager Mike Knar, will offer 24-hour programming that focuses on pot, including personal anecdotes, product reviews, discussion of marijuana legislation, and features from the National Marijuana News Service.
I wish Knar and company the best, but I believe their business model is flawed. Weed is certainly a timely topic, but round-the-clock coverage of cannabis is like dedicating a station 24/7 to booze. There are only so many stories about marijuana and brownie recipes to share. I fear that a sizeable audience may be attracted for a short period of time, but will dwindle as the novelty wears off and the fumes dissipate.
