STERLING — A teenager who helped her boyfriend kill his grandparents so he could get a modest inheritance was sentenced Friday to 80 years in prison.
Cassandra Rieb, 19, struck a deal with prosecutors and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and first-degree assault with a deadly weapon on an at-risk victim. She faced a possible death sentence in the May 2014 strangulation deaths of Charles and Shirley Severance, both 70.
Rieb’s co-defendant, Brendan Johnson, 20, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the death of his grandmother and was sentenced Monday to life in prison without parole.
