On Thursday, the Broncos traded up five spots in the first round of the draft , a defensive end out of Missouri that many projected to go in the top 10 before a marijuana possession citation caused him to drop on the boards.
Ray, a 6-foot-3, 245-pound edge rusher who will team with veteran linemen Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware in Denver, grew up in Kansas City, Mo., and attended Bishop Miege High School, where he played for Tim Grunhard, a former NFL offensive lineman.
Coming out of high school, Ray was ranked by Rivals.com as the No. 17 weakside end in the country and the No. 3 player in Kansas, at any position. As a junior, he helped lead Bishop Miege to a 4-A state championship and totaled 131 tackles, 32 tackles for loss, 15 sacks and four forced fumbles.
As a senior, he recorded 100 tackles, including 16 for loss, 10.5 sacks and three forced fumbles, and earned First Team All-State honors.
