Incumbent Denver City Council member Albus Brooks appeared on his way to a second term, leading comfortably over Michael “Borch” Borcherding and Ean Tafoya with most of the ballots counted in on Tuesday night.

Brooks had 67 percent of the vote. Tafoya had 17 percent of the vote. Borcherding had 15 percent.

Brooks needs to have at least 50 percent of the vote to avoid a runoff.

He was first elected to represent District 9 four years ago, but the boundaries have been redrawn to account for neighborhood population changes.

Borcherding is a business executive and entrepreneur. Tafoya is a former City Council legislative assistant and community organizer.

The downtown-centric district includes City Park, City Park West, Cole, Whittier, Globeville, Five Points, Union Station and the Auraria campus, as well as the Elyria-Swansea neighborhood and the National Western Complex.

The district’s issues include homelessness, growth and the problems associated about 120,000 downtown workers entering the district each workday.
