The 14-year-old boy accused of stabbing a fellow student last week on the playground at Aspen Creek K-8 school in Broomfield appeared briefly in court Tuesday. Lawyers asked a judge for a protection order for the victim.
Judge Francis Wasserman approved a request for a protection order for the 14-year-old girl who was wounded. Lawyers also requested a placement hearing May 27 to decide whether the boy should stay at the Adams County Juvenile Detention Center, where he is being held, or go home with his parents.
The boy will stay at the detention center until the hearing, said district attorney’s spokeswoman Sue Lindsay.
The boy appeared in court a day after being charged with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault and possession of a weapon on school grounds.
The stabbing happened about 11:30 a.m. Thursday. The victim, stabbed in the back, was flown to Children’s Hospital Colorado, according to Broomfield police.
The boy also is being charged as a violent juvenile offender for the use or threatened use of a deadly weapon and as an aggravated juvenile offender. Both are sentencing enhancers, according to a news release from the district attorney’s office.
Wasserman told the boy he will receive behavioral reports from the detention center, which might be taken into consideration when discussing whether the boy will remain in custody or go home with his parents.
Officials have not released the name of the boy because he is a minor.
