Colorado Springs police arrested a 49-year-old man who they say was covered in mud when he broke into four homes on Tuesday afternoon before attacking an officer with a chair while in custody.

Gerald Kimble has been booked into the El Paso County jail on several felony charges, including four counts of burglary, one count of first-degree assault of a police officer and one count of attempt to escape.

Officers were first called out to a home on the 100 block of 12th Street at about 1 p.m. where police say Kimble kicked in the door of a residence and confronted a 5-year-old who was lying on a couch inside.

Kimble then fled from arriving officers and subsequently broke into three more homes in an attempt to hide from authorities, police say.

“(Kimble) was contacted and detained by the resident of the fourth home until the police arrived on the scene,” according to a police news release. “The suspect had obtained an injury while fleeing and breaking into the homes so he was transported to Memorial Hospital for a medical evaluation.”

Police say while at the hospital Kimble attempted to escape arrest by grabbing a chair and attacking a police officer, striking him twice in the head.

Authorities did not immediately say if the officer was injured in the confrontation.
