Several baby raccoons were rescued in Ken Caryl on Wednesday after being trapped under a porch, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office says.

“(The homeowners) had trapped and relocated an adult raccoon a few days earlier, but did not realize that there were babies under there as well,” . “They called us because they did not have access to the babies due to the tiny space under their wooden deck.”

An animal control officer who responded could hear the babies crying. Firefighters were called and removed the deck so the raccoons could be freed.

The babies were taken to Squirrel Creek Wildlife Rescue in Littleton where they are being cared for, release said.

“Though this citizen was trying to do the right thing, this is a good reminder of what not to do when dealing with wildlife issues,” according to the sheriff’s office. “Now that we are in the spring season with lots of wildlife activity and plenty of babies, it’s important to know that it is not lawful to remove wildlife without contacting Colorado Parks and Wildlife.”
