Former Colorado U.S. Sen. Gary Hart, a Democrat. (Special to the Post.)

WASHINGTON — No, the sun didn’t rise in the west Friday morning. But you’d be forgiven for thinking so after a rare ray of political cheer appeared out of nowhere in the letters section of The Denver Post.

In a , former Democratic U.S. Sen. Gary Hart apologized to Republican Cory Gardner for comments he made following The Denver Post endorsement of Gardner in his 2014 Senate race against then-U.S. Sen. Mark Udall, D-Colo., which Gardner ultimately won.

Here’s last year: For The Denver Post “to conclude that Mr. Gardner will be anything other than a consistent vote for a Tea Party dictated agenda on the major social and economic issues of the day is confounding. Simply because one source called him a ‘rising star’ does not qualify him for Senate membership.”

Now Hart — — wants to make amends. In the apology letter he reiterates his support for Udall, but also admits to making “disparaging comments about Gardner.”

“That was uncharacteristic for me and contributed to the bitter partisanship now stalemating our government. I regret having done so,” he wrote. “Having made those written comments in a public forum, I now apologize publicly to Sen. Gardner for my comments.”
