Police arrested a Colorado Springs man on Tuesday afternoon after authorities say he wrapped his 84-year-old mother in a vacuum cord and threatened to killer her and his sister.

Matthew McBride, 47, is being held at the El Paso County jail on suspicion of intimidating a witness and false imprisonment.

Officers were called out to a home on the 3300 block of Soaring Bird Circle just before 2 p.m. to assist firefighters who had been summoned there earlier.

McBride’s mother told authorities that trouble began when her son demanded she sign a witness statement he had written in connection with a harassment and third-degree assault case he faced.

Authorities say the case centered around McBride and his sister.

“She refused because she did not witness some of the stuff in the statement,” police said in a news release. “He wrapped her up with a vacuum cord and threatened to kill her and his sister. He then told her he would not let her go unless she signed the statement.”

McBride’s mother pushed a Life Alert button, calling medical personnel and firefighters to the home who then asked for police assistance upon their arrival.

Authorities say McBride fled when firefighters first got to the home and was arrested later by police in a nearby park.
