A semi driver who swerved to avoid some deer crossing Interstate 70 ended up hitting and killing another driver.

The crash happened just before 1:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-70 near Strasburg, according to Trooper Nate Reid with the Colorado State Patrol.

A man driving a Kia had pulled over onto the right shoulder because he was having some kind of mechanical problem with the car’s lights, Trooper Reid said.

A semi hauling two trailers was traveling in the right lane when some deer walked onto the highway.

The semi driver swerved to the left, then back to the right, side-swiping the Kia, Reid said. A passenger in the Kia, a woman, was taken to a hospital, but her condition was not known.
