A sophomore jinx? Apparently Cheyenne Mountain’s Daniel Carr missed the memo.

The Indians sophomore had a big day, winning three state titles, including the 200 individual medley and 100 freestyle, to lead Cheyenne Mountain to the Class 4A boys state swimming and diving championship Saturday at the Veterans Memorial Aquatics Center in Thornton.

It is the school’s first title since 2002 and the fourth overall.

Carr shattered the 11-year-old Class 4A 200 IM record by nearly 2½ seconds and later broke the classification’s 100 freestyle mark by 0.74 seconds.

Thompson Valley senior John Thorne captured his third consecutive title in the 100 backstroke. Teammate Kyle Pape won the diving title, a marked improvement from his seventh-place finish the year before.

Despite a strong run, Air Academy fell short of winning its fourth consecutive state title. Hunter Doerr won the 50 freestyle, and Caleb Hicks claimed the 100 butterfly. The two also helped the Kadets win the 200 medley and 200 free relays.
